ROAD NETWORK FACES MONDAY MELTDOWN IN SEVERE STORMS

Update: 6pm, Monday 10th March

Good Evening. Today's conditions have not been as serious as we expected, and most of the country is now experiencing something of a lull. Although the weather is far calmer, the effects have been significant; over 70 roads were affected by fallen trees (mainly A and B roads) and power cables have been blown down by high winds (82mph has been recorded in Devon) resulting in a loss of power for 7,000 homes in south west England and 3,000 in Wales.

The Met Office has now extended the weather warnings to stretch into mid-afternoon on Wednesday. The second swathe of severe weather is going to move in tomorrow afternoon, and focus on the North of the country. The strongest winds are expected to reach Northern Ireland during Tuesday evening, and then transfer across parts of south west Scotland, northern England, north Wales and the Midlands during Wednesday. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph are expected with the possibility of 80 mph gusts on exposed coasts and hills. Disruption to transport and power supplies is possible and there may be damage to buildings and trees. A severe weather warning remains until 9pm this evening, for the far south west.
